Last week, HarborTech Mobility was able to detect and inform a customer of a critical networking outage before the customer even realized the network was down. A power failure interrupted a facility that was about to come online as the business day started, so it was critical to get the network back online as quickly as possible. HTMI engineers were on standby to help facilitate a network recovery as soon as the power was restored. Once restored we were able to bring all network services online with minimal downtime.

This was possible because HTMI engineers detected this through our 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC). As the enterprise migrates services towards the cloud, end users and administrators face hurdles that compete with IT security policy and requirements. For example, users may have multiple accounts in which they have to manage and maintain in order to access these cloud based and internally hosted services. Administrators face challenges with IT helpdesk support and security threats due to out dated passwords, easily guessed passwords, attrition, and number of services to support.

Single sign-on or SSO for short gets the enterprise back on track with minimal effort to implement and use. Single sign-on interconnects with the enterprise’s identity store such as Microsoft Active Directory. A single set of credentials allows users and administrators to access and manage internal resources such as email, wireless and or wired access, and applications just to name a few. SSO also allows that same set of credentials to gain access to cloud hosted applications provided by services that support SSO.

Single sign-on supports multiple different configuration types, however the most common one we see, configure, and support includes SAML 2.0 or “security assertion markup language”. SAML 2.0 consists of three moving parts, the user or “principal”, the cloud application or “service provider”, and the user database or “identity provider”. SAML 2.0 is an open standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between two autonomous groups. It consists of XML based protocol messages, bindings, and profiles. This allows a single web site or portal to enable and allow “single sign-on” for users and all of their web or network based applications and services.

Cloud based solutions exist to integrate your identity store with your SAML 2.0 enabled applications. At first glance it sounds like the perfect solution, however common themes are apparent on reviews of said services. The most popular complaints found on the web include poor customer support, set up costs, and monthly and yearly reoccurring costs.

Most enterprise own and operate Microsoft Windows Server in either virtualized or bare metal implementations. If that’s the case, the enterprise may easily extend Microsoft Windows Server to support a service called Microsoft Active Directory Federation Servers or ADFS for short. Chances are, by using the software and hardware you already own, you can easily deploy ADFS and implement single-sign yourself eliminating poor technical support experiences and reducing total operational costs.

The Aruba Certified ClearPass Professional (ACCP) certification validates that you can design and integrate networks that use ClearPass products. This certification validates your ability to configure ClearPass for policy and guest management, posture, profiling, onboarding.

This multi-tier technical certification programs offered by Aruba distinguish individuals with engineering excellence in indoor and outdoor wireless LANs (WLANs), remote networking, mobility and network management. The rigorous associate-, professional-, and expert-level certification curriculum and exams ensure that network engineers gain the essential, comprehensive knowledge to accelerate their professional development.

Ayoub Chabrouk is our fifth engineer with the ACCP (Aruba Certified Clearpass Professional) certification. HarborTech Mobility’s certified engineers have extensive engineering knowledge in solving real-world wireless networking deployment challenges. We recently completed our 2018 CKO (company kickoff meeting).  It was great seeing and collaborating with HarborTech team members and partners over the two-day event.  This year’s company kickoff meeting was held at our new corporate headquarters located in Bothell, WA.  Our company kickoff meeting provides a great format to share our goals and objectives for the upcoming year, discuss best practices and experiences and receive valuable training from our strategic partners.  We would like to thank all our partners who provided sales and technical training during the CKO meeting.

As a business we are always focused on improving our processes and better serving our customers. It was exciting to receive training on the newest version of Sales Force, Concur and Liquid Planner.  Our continued investment in these types of software applications is very important as our business continues to grow.
